Wow! It's been awhile since I posted anything. I suppose that is mostly because every new day is pretty much the same as the day before. I was reading through my latest posts and thought the most meaningful thing I could post about now is the time I get to spend with my husband. Our lives have drastically changed and the future is more uncertain than it normally would be. The definitive diagnosis of Early Alzheimer's hit me like a kick in the gut even though it was suspected for a couple of years. The anxiety I felt increased as people told me how the government could wipe us out financially if we ever needed long-term care. That doesn't take into account the assisted living that could be necessary that Medicare won't pay for when the diagnosis is Alzheimer's. In my researching, I found a good Elder Law lawyer that has saved us from poverty and provided me with some much needed peace of mind. Now I can focus on making our lives together the best possible under the circumstances for whatever time we have left. It has been a roller coaster so far mostly for me. He doesn't have a clue what is going on (and won't accept it anyway) or that anything is amiss with his mind or behavior. I have decided to use this blog as a journal of our final journey so I and our family will have something to look back on in years to come. I don't just want to remember the challenges, I want to remember who my husband was and really is.
I won't lie and say I am handling things well all the time. I get frustrated a lot and feel guilty when I do. Today I received a Facebook post from an old high school friend. He didn't know at the time he sent it I am dealing with this but it was so appropriate to my and Dad's situation, I saved it so I can refer to it often. This is what it said:
So, I will try to post often. No guarantees on how often but I am dedicating my blog for now, to my husband and eternal companion.
